Please Don’t Do This at My Open Houses :)
The Bathroom Dilemma
At nearly every open house, I get the same request: “Can I use the restroom?” Honestly, I don’t understand it. Did everyone just skip the bathroom before heading out on a house tour? Why is my listing’s bathroom suddenly the most popular spot in town?
Emergencies Happen—But Still
Of course, true emergencies are understandable. But even then, it’s a problem:
The toilet might not be spotless.
The sounds (and smells) don’t exactly help buyers imagine themselves in the space.
Some homes even have plumbing shut off during open houses to prevent leaks.
Nothing kills the mood of a showing faster than a noisy flush echoing through the house.
Keep It Clean and Respectful
If you absolutely must use the restroom:
Make sure it’s clean afterward.
Always put the toilet lid down.
Better yet, save it for a stop before or after the tour.
Think about it: buyers are trying to picture their dream life in this home. A bathroom interruption isn’t exactly the vibe they’re looking for.
My House Rule
For simplicity (and to avoid plumbing disasters), I like to plan that bathrooms at open houses are off-limits. It keeps the experience clean, seamless, and focused on the property—not the plumbing.
✨ Takeaway: Respect the home you’re visiting. Use the restroom before the tour, not during it. Trust me—everyone will thank you.
